Cleaning and maintaining your gutters.

We get a lot of calls to do leak repairs for homeowners.  A common call comes when people see water damage on the wood surrounding the perimeter of their house.  (Technically called the “soffit”.)  The homeowner naturally thinks the leak is coming from the roof but the cause is more often the gutters.  If you do not regularly clean out your gutters they will get clogged up with leaves, dirt, or anything else blowing in the wind.  Throw in tennis balls (the perfect size to block a downspout), frisbees, pet toys, and an endless variety of objects kids throw and the downspouts can become blocked.  Once the water is blocked and the water is not draining properly the gutters will start to fill up during a rain.  The water will then spill over the front and back of the gutter.  The water spilling over the gutters will find its way onto the fascia and possibly in the soffit and you will eventually see water damage on one or both of these areas.

What are the possible solutions to this problem?

  1. Hire a reputable gutter company to clean out and maintain your gutters annually.  A reputable gutter company can clean your gutters, perform routine maintenance on your gutters (making sure they are leveled and sealed properly), and offer you options such as leaf screens to protect your gutters from the numerous obstacles that clog your gutters.
  2. Do it yourself!  You can clean your gutters yourself using something as simple as a leaf blower to blow out all of the unwanted leaves and dirt.

Cleaning and maintaining your gutters each year can be a pain, but it will prevent you from having problems related to your gutters in the future.  Add this project to your 2015 New Year “To Do” list and call us if we can help you with your gutters or any other projects on that list!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!
